Strategic Ways to Use Access Control Systems to Enhance Security

May 12, 2017

To better understand how to enhance your property's security, it's important to first understand the basics of different security technology. Access control systems enhance building safety and security as well as maintain a few basic components that work together for optimal functionality. Read this blog to learn strategic ways to use access control systems to enhance your business's security.

Strategically Placed Cameras

When there is an incident or even an attempt to breach your building, it’s important to resolve the issue and have the evidence to do so. This will ensure the issue won’t happen again and the person or the people responsible are accounted for. Therefore, it’s important to strategically integrate your surveillance cameras with your facility’s access control system. For instance, you have several doors utilizing access control with a surveillance camera at each one. Depending on which door experienced the breach, the access control system can provide the needed information of when but the cameras can provide the who and the how. Access control systems help to streamline processes by having integrated security cameras.

Integrated Alarms

Electronic door locks are utilized to either replace traditional keys or to add further automation features, enhancing property security. Although these types of locks are generally used for cars, many cutting-edge security providers are offering electronic door locks for homes and businesses (Source). This security technology allows for the door to remain locked until the user inputs the proper credentials that will send a signal for the door to be temporarily unlocked. The position alert works alongside the locking device as this technology sends an alert to personnel if the door were to be propped open. This alert is necessary as the door should remain closed and locked to ensure people who shouldn't have access are not able to enter the premises.

Varied Access Levels

A keypad reader is integrated to receive the needed information as a person uses this device to request access. A common system for commercial buildings is the proximity card reader. This system works when card is used within a few inches of the reader. That reader will then calculate the identification information from the access card that was used. The identification information, or card number, is sent upstream to the controller for processing. Once, the information is processed the system will either grant or deny access depending on credentials. It's also important to note that each reader can only talk to its corresponding card type due to the unique technologies used in each (Source).

These card readers are beneficial to also allow for varied access levels. For instance, the CEO of the business will need access to several areas of the building whereas an employee working in a specific sector will not. This is also important for facilities like banks that hold sensitive information and money or industrial buildings that have safety risk areas that should only allow access to essential personnel. For these reasons, it's important to have access control systems that manage access for all levels from guests to business leaders.

Security Officer Management

With cameras and alarms integrated with the access control system, the other component you need is someone to manage the system. It's important to have a professional who has the knowledge and training needed if an emergency were to occur. It's one thing to have the technology to deter and detect criminal activity but it's also important to have the means necessary to resolve the issue quickly and professionally. Not only are security officers helpful if an incident were to occur but they have the training and field work needed to prevent  incidents from happening. Security officers will know what to look for if an individual is acting suspiciously, in person or on the cameras, and interfere before something were to happen. Ultimately, with the right security technology and security personnel, you'll improve the protection of your business and the people who frequent it.
