How to Protect Your Car Dealership From Theft

August 30, 2017

Car dealerships contain a considerable amount of valuable merchandise spread over a large area. For this reason, it’s important to properly protect your lot from security breaches. Because these lots have so much area, security can often be a difficult task. Here are some tips to protect your car dealership from theft.

Car Dealership Security

Position Cars Strategically

A great tactic to preventing theft is to position the cars on your lot in a preventative fashion. Surround the more valuable cars completely in order to block any exits a potential theft might have. Park vehicles at the end of aisles and near exits in order to block all driving paths out of the lot. When parking each car, be sure to put the emergency break on and turn the front wheels to the side. This parking tactic will make it difficult to tow vehicles or remove the wheels.

Proper Lighting

A good tactic to protect your dealership from theft is to make sure your lot is well lit. Proper lighting will deter theft, as potential thieves will be less likely to attempt to steal if they can be easily seen. Additionally, proper lighting is a good tool when you have a surveillance system in place, as it will be easier to see the property through the cameras while it’s being monitored.

Surveillance System

Installing security cameras and a proper surveillance system is an important tool in preventing theft. Simply having cameras posted around your property will deter theft, as potential thieves will be less likely to steal with the increased chance of getting caught. If a threat does occur, a surveillance system will allow you to monitor your property and address the threat before anything is stolen. In the event that theft does occur, a surveillance system is crucial in compiling evidence that can be used to catch the offender and rectify the situation.

Security Officers

Another great way to prevent theft in your car dealership is to hire security officers at night. Having guards posted to monitor the property will deter the threat of theft, as offenders will avoid getting caught. Security officers will be able to monitor the property, and if a threat does occur, they can address it immediately. The advantage to security officers on the ground is that their response can be immediate, whereas a surveillance system will create a delayed response that could allow the perpetrator to get away.

Gated Access Control

Although it would hinder business to have controlled access during the day, gated access control at night can greatly improve the security of your car dealership. A gate will prevent trespassers from getting in and out and make it very difficult to drive a car out of the lot. Access control will ensure that the only people allowed in are people to which you grant access for specific purposes, such as employees performing specific tasks at night. If someone climbs the gate or attempts to break through, an alarm will sound that will alert the authorities who will quickly address the problem.
