Fire detection systems are used as a precautionary measure to help alert people if a building were to be at risk of fire. However, if the system isn't functioning properly, then you and your property is at risk. Why have a fire alarm if the system in your building doesn't work correctly? An outdated fire detection system puts people at risk, therefore it's important the system is updated and regularly checked to ensure the safety of everyone.
## The Risks Of An Outdated System
You may not feel a replacement or an upgrade is necessary and some businesses hold off because they don't have the time or want to save the money spent to update the system. However, this can be a costly mistake as a fire puts people at risk, can damage and destroy buildings and can ruin a businesses reputation. Safety is of the utmost importance and an upgrade outweighs the cost of the potential risks of an outdated system.
## Test The System's Functionality
You may not even be aware that your fire detection system is outdated and that can pose an even bigger threat. The system is supposed to alert when in danger of fire. However, the device you rely on for this warning isn't even working and the worst part, you are not even aware the system you depend on isn't even working. To ensure you aren't in danger or caught by surprise when a threat occurs, be sure to test your fire alarm system annually and change the batteries every six months.
## Know When It's Time For An Upgrade
Don't ignore the warning signs. An outdated system puts you at risk as an upgraded system can save lives. The following are the top three reasons to know when it's time for an upgrade.
**False Alarms **
A way to know when it's time for an upgrade is if your detection system seems to unnecessarily make alerting noise. Not only is this obnoxious but it's a sign the system is not functioning properly. The occurrence of false alarms can also potentially result in fire department fines or increased fees from the alarm monitoring/service companies.
**Visible Wear And Tear**
Wear and tear on the outside may exemplify more signs of damage from the interior. If you start to notice that your old system looks to be a little more damaged, this is the perfect opportunity to bring in experts to check the wiring and test the system's functionality.
**Older Model **
Older systems may not be able to take advantage of new technologies available that can offer more than an older system can. A newer system can also help build a businesses reputation as people aware that they invest in the latest technology to ensure the property's and the people's safety.
