5 Indications That Your Security Technology Needs An Upgrade

March 30, 2017

Your security systems may be fully functional but as technology advances, the technology around your business should advance too. More safety risks arise over time and businesses should be prepared to prevent any security incidents from happening. Equipping your facility with the latest security technology can provide better efficiency for operation as well as simpler methods for employee use. Additionally, newer technology provides improved audit trails, if a security incident were to occur. You may feel the technology you have is effective, however, there are several risks involved with outdated systems that your facility may not even be aware of. Read this blog further to learn about the signs of outdated security technology so you know when it's time enhance your security.

Problematic Wiring

Alarm systems that hardwired create several security issues, particularly for commercial properties. For instance, wired systems can be easily tampered with as the wires, especially exposed wires, can be cut or damaged without anyone knowing. On the other hand, wireless alarm systems are enclosed and also possess a built-in protection that sends a signal when tampering is attempted. Modern alarm systems have back-up power sources or alternative technologies that will prevent your system from being vulnerable unlike a hardwired system. Therefore, if you realize that your entire business only has a wired alarm system, you should begin to consider adding wireless that utilizes cellular connections to enhance security.

Low Resolution Cameras

When you review your security camera footage, are you able to clearly see what is happening and identify the people involved? If you struggle to see the images clearly, imagine attempting to use that footage to identify possible criminals; rendering your security insignificant. Grainy footage can be a result of older cameras, poor wiring, your recording device or a wide variety of other factors. Modern high-definition quality cameras mean that surveillance system can pick up on the finer details and provide the quality needed to ensure all incidents are clearly captured.

Additionally, older cameras may have blind spots, allowing incidents to occur without detection. Upgrading your security cameras not only enhance the resolution but also provide an opportunity to asses where the cameras should be placed. This will ensure that all areas are being recorded for better security.

Lack Of Remote Monitoring

In recent years, smartphones and tablets have progressed to be able to track almost every aspect of our lives, so why shouldn't you be able to track your building's security as well? Having a video management system that you can access and control remotely not only reduces response times in the event of a break-in but also helps to eliminate the need for around-the-clock security officers.

From an operations standpoint, having 24/7 access to view your business allows you to plan around weather conditions, monitor traffic patterns, and evaluate employee efficiency. Simply put, not having that option puts your business at a disadvantage in the competitive marketplace.

Cannot Expand Security System

Older security camera systems were not build to accommodate change. If you find yourself struggling to try and make angles or shots work for your surveillance needs instead of adding additional devices, it may be time to upgrade your basic system. Modern IP based system hooked up to commercial grade servers can allow you to expand as your needs grow to add cameras and additional monitoring devices.

Missing Security Opportunities

With the advancement of technology, there are constantly new security devices being created that can enhance your business's security. Examine your building to asses what areas may be at risk and how the latest technology can improve the sections needing improvement. Utilize a risk assessment of the property to analyze each and every entry point, visitor access, hallway cameras, etc. as you’ll obtain a better understanding of needed safety measures. Not only can you see what areas require an upgrade but also have the opportunity to learn more about innovative security technology that advances safety measurements altogether.
