What Are The Basic Components Of An Access Control System?

August 04, 2016

To better understand how to enhance your property's security, it's important to first understand the basics of different security technology. Access control systems enhance building safety and security as well as maintain a few basic components that work together for optimal functionality. Read this article further to learn more about the basic components of an access control system

Components Of Access Control

Credentials To Get The System Started

To get started with a new access control system, you'll need to set up the proper credentials ensuring the right people have manageability and security access to the system. Setting these credentials will provide accountability for who has requested access as well as who has set up the authorization rules that were created and implemented. Credentials also include the implementation of access card systems and can even incorporate the added security of a personal identification number or a biometric feature. The credential that is used serves as a method by which identification of the individual is sent to the system for authorization to either grant or deny access to the building or property.

Keypad Card Reader To Deny Or Grant Access

A keypad reader is integrated to receive the needed information as a person uses this device to request access. A common system for commercial buildings is the proximity card reader. This system works when card is used within a few inches of the reader. That reader will then calculate the identification information from the access card that was used. The identification information, or card number, is sent upstream to the controller for processing. Once, the information is processed the system will either grant or deny access depending on credentials. It's also important to note that each reader can only talk to its corresponding card type due to the unique technologies used in each (Source).

Building Door Locking Device And Alert System

Electronic door locks are utilized to either replace traditional keys or to add further automation features, enhancing property security. Although these types of locks are generally used for cars, many cutting-edge security providers are offering electronic door locks for homes and businesses (Source). This security technology allows for the door to remain locked until the user inputs the proper credentials that will send a signal for the door to be temporarily unlocked. The position alert works alongside the locking device as this technology sends an alert to personnel if the door were to be propped open. This alert is necessary as the door should remain closed and locked to ensure people who shouldn't have access are not able to enter the premises.

Access Control System Software

The software is what allows the owners of the business and trained employees to interact with the access control system. The software will include everything from a simple start up to your business security and technology preferences. However intricate your software is, the main purpose is to allow users to enter information, create permission procedures, and review accountability information of the overall technology. The software is the bridge between user and technology, simplifying the security process while keeping the property and it's occupants safe.
