How Do I Know if My Security System is Outdated?

December 20, 2022

Depositphotos_64965501_LThe world has been adapting to the exponential growth of technology for a generation; in this regard, commercial security systems are no different. It's essential to keep pace with technological changes to ensure security for your facility.  Like all technology, video surveillance systems have been experiencing significant improvements over the last few years, and that often can mean the difference between having your facility properly secured or not.

This post covers five ways that you can tell that your system is outdated and that it's time to start a discussion about a new surveillance system.

How To Tell If Your Security System Is Outdated:

Grainy Footage & Struggling To See Imagery

When you review your camera live-stream or recordings, do you have to strain your eyes to gain an understanding of what's going on in the video? If you're having a hard time seeing your images clearly, imagine attempting to use that footage to identify possible criminals; it's worthless. Modern high-definition quality cameras mean that surveillance system can pick up on the finer details.

For instance, with a new camera system, you could see the make and model of a thief's vehicle, as well as a license plate number.  Grainy footage can be a result of older cameras, poor wiring, your recording device or a wide variety of other factors.

Can't Expand Upon The System Without Headaches

Older security camera systems were not build to accommodate change. If you find yourself struggling to try and make angles or shots work for your surveillance needs instead of adding additional devices, it may be time to upgrade your basic system. Modern IP based system hooked up to commercial grade servers can allow you to expand as your needs grow to add cameras and additional monitoring devices.

Alarm System Is Hardwired

Hard-wired alarm system may still be effective for home use, but their relevance in the commercial security sector is waning. Upgrading to a wireless system will put you ahead of the curve, while maintaining a high level of security. Unfortunately, hard-wired alarm systems can be rendered ineffective if anyone tampers with the device's wiring, which facilitates communication between the monitoring station and your business.

Modern alarm systems have back-up power sources or alternative technologies that will prevent your system from being vulnerable like a hard-wired system. Therefore, if you realize that your entire business only has a wired alarm system, you should begin to consider adding wireless  that use cellular connections to enhance security.

No Remote Monitoring Capabilities

In recent years smartphones and tablets have advanced to be able to track your workouts, diet, and finances, so why shouldn't you be able to track your building's security as well? Having a video management system that you can access and control remotely not only reduces response times in the event of a break-in but also helps to eliminate the need for around-the-clock security officers.

From an operations standpoint, having 24/7 access to view your business allows you to plan around weather conditions, monitor traffic patterns, and assess employee efficiency. Frankly, not having that option puts your business at a disadvantage in the competitive marketplace.

You Can't Tell When Your System Is Down

It's inevitable: all camera systems are susceptible to issues and need service from time to time. Just like your lap needs to be restarted every once and a while, so do the cameras and other key devices on your security systems. IP based systems and security hardware allow users to actively ping and monitor uptime, allowing systems to automatically reboot and alert you of an issue, instead of learning your camera is off when it's too late.
